Season 2 is one day away, and Bungie has published the final pre-launch details. On top of everything arriving with Nightfall on June 2, the team is opening Marathon's doors to everyone for a full week — and adding a brand-new experimental mode, a set of Twitch Drop rewards, and new platform cosmetic packs to mark the occasion.

Open Play Week — June 2 to June 9

Starting June 2, Marathon is free to play on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S through June 9. This is a clean entry point — Season 2 resets everyone to the same starting line. Vaults are wiped, Armories reset, and runner shells return to defaults, so anyone jumping in for the first time will be learning the new season's content right alongside returning players.

Any progress you make during the Open Play Week carries over if you buy the game. Anyone who already owns Marathon gets all Season 2 gameplay content at no extra cost.

Launching alongside Open Play Week is a new experimental mode called Sponsored Survival, running June 2 to June 9 on the new Night Marsh zone.

Here's how it works: a single crew drops in as the only players on the map. For the first stretch of the run they have the zone largely to themselves — they can explore, loot, and light up the dark without worrying about other runners. The UESC are still there in full force, along with some new enemies that come with the dark, but PvP pressure starts low.

After a set period, individual Rooks are backfilled into the map. They can team up with each other, with the crew, or keep to themselves — the goal for everyone is to survive to the end. The match runs on an 18-minute timer. When it hits zero, a final exfil spawns and everyone has a limited window to reach it. From there: negotiate a temporary truce and leave together, or turn your weapons on each other in the dead of night.

The crew is required to bring a Sponsored Kit loadout for this mode, which keeps the stakes low and gives Rooks the peace of mind of knowing there's no fully geared-out team waiting for them. When queuing as the crew you can use queue fill to find teammates, or disable it to run as a duo or solo. While Sponsored Survival is running, other Rook queues are disabled — all Rooks filter into this mode.

Like Duos Queue and Sponsored Queue before it, Sponsored Survival is an experiment. Bungie has flagged that each of these modes has the potential to become a permanent fixture, evolve into something else, or inform future experiments. A PvE mode is also being tested in the second half of Season 2.

Season 2 Twitch Drops

Five new Twitch Drop rewards are available from June 2 at 10am PT to June 9 at 10am PT. Watch anyone streaming in the Marathon category to earn them:

  • 15 minutes: Weapon Sticker — Broadcast Mask
  • 30 minutes: Weapon Sticker — On Target
  • 1 hour: Profile Emblem — On Target
  • 2 hours: Profile Background — Broadcast Disrupt
  • 3 hours: Magnum Weapon Style — Transmit Engine
  • Gift 1 sub: Bully Weapon Style — Transmit Engine

New Platform Cosmetic Bundles

To mark Season 2's launch, there are new cosmetic bundles available on each platform — separate from the weapon charms released at launch.
